The Bible in Rhyme

By Ellen Zimmerman on Oct 08, 2015 12:19 am

The Bible in RhymeI was totally intrigued by a series of books written by author/poet Marcia Goldlist about the Bible in Rhyme, including“Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme.”

Here are a few of the verses, to give you a flavor:

Then, in the sky, God put shining lights

To separate days from nights,

And also to be signs,

For the days, years and holidays of all kinds.

The shining lights with the brightest rays

Would be in charge of days,

While the one with dimmer light

Would be in charge of night.

A big thanks to Marcia for this post.

Every week we are lucky enough to have a holiday – Shabbat. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that this too is a holiday, just like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, which we just celebrated. One of the important aspects of Shabbat is that we gradually read the whole Torah throughout the year.

Ways to talk about the Torah portion at home

Since we are at the beginning of the Torah cycle, this is a great time to start reading and discussing the Torah portion every week.

Where to discuss the Torah portion?

  • while at the Shabbat table
  • sitting around the living room on Shabbat afternoon
  • while preparing for Shabbat
  • any other family time

What should I read with my child?

For very young children, you might want to read a Bible story book with lots of pictures based on the weekly portion. But don’t stop there because your child can handle more and that will only interest the youngest children. Also, the more different ways that you present the Torah, the more that it will interest your children – and yourself. After all, different people absorb and are interested by different styles.

Read Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme out loud with your children. This is the actual book of Genesis (minus long lists of names and places) written in rhyming couplets. Even if your child doesn’t understand all the words (which you can explain to them) they will listen because of the rhyme. For young readers, you may want to buy the large print edition to make reading easier.

Take it up a notch

  1. Read the parsha (weekly Torah portion) using various voices for different parts.
  2. Let your children act out the situation as you read.
  3. With parshas that have people speaking have your children read various “parts.”
  4. After you have read the portion, or a segment of it, have your children act it out in their own way.
  5. Read your child part of the parsha and have them draw an appropriate picture. If you do this throughout the week, by the end of the week you can put together a book of the parsha in pictures. Or have your child pick one aspect of the parsha each week to draw about.
  6. If your children are musical, have them pick a verse or two that they can make into a song.

Discussion and activities

Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme Workbook has lots of discussion questions and activities which will get your kids – and you – thinking about and relating to the people, events, and various aspects of the parsha. Although it is geared to children from about eleven, much of the material can easily be adapted to younger children.

  1. Explain the questions in words that your child will understand.
  2. Help your child think out answers by discussing them with you.

Reading and discussing the Torah portion with your child will not only bring your child (and you) closer to the Torah and Shabbat, but also to each other.

Joseph tells his brothers he will still feed them and their children.

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

Joseph’s brothers were afraid how he would act once their father died. They were worried not only about how Joseph would treat them, but also if he would still give them and their children food.

Bible Study Tools

Bible Talk

Discuss with your children:

  • Have you ever been worried about not having enough food to eat?
      • If not, what do you think that this would feel like?
  • Have you ever been really afraid of someone?
      • If you were, what did it feel like.
      • If you weren’t, what do you think it would feel like?

Creative Thinking

  • Name as many things as you can that make people afraid.
      • Order these things according to what you think is objectively the most frightening to the least.
  • Make a list of as many moods as you can.

Homeschool Activities

  • Research what moods people have and what puts people into those moods.
  • Write an instruction page on how to put someone into a good mood.
  • Write a letter to someone explaining to them how they put you into a bad mood.
      • Add a paragraph or two to the person explaining how they could have gotten you out of the bad mood.
  • Write a flyer with tips on how to stay in a good mood.
  • Joseph’s brothers were afraid of how he would treat them after his father was gone. Write a flyer with tips on how not to be afraid of your siblings.
  • Joseph’s brothers really were not nice to him, yet he forgave them. Create a billboard to get people to be forgiving.
  • Joseph told his brothers right away that he would still give them and their children food. It must be horrible to feel afraid that you will not have enough to eat. Think of a way that you can help a local food bank.

Bible, Olympics and the connection with lying and apologizing

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

After burying Jacob, Joseph’s brothers told him that Jacob had told them that they were given a message from Jacob to tell Joseph. They told Joseph that they were to forgive them. After this they added in an apology of their own.

Bible Study Tools

Bible Talk

Discuss with your children:

  • For what type of things should we apologize?
  • What makes an apology sincere?

Creative Thinking

  • Joseph’s brothers lied to Joseph. They told him that their father, Jacob, had instructed them to give a message to Joseph to forgive his brothers.  Give reasons that it is okay that Joseph’s brothers lied to him and reasons why it was not okay.
  • Come up with a rule stating when it is okay to lie or when it is not acceptable to lie.
  • Olympic athletes who take down an opponent in a sport like snowboarding surely don’t mean any harm to the other player. However, they did ruin the chances of that Olympian to win a medal and often to even cross the finish line. Should the Olympic athlete who took another Olympic athlete out of the race apologize, or is it not necessary? Give an argument on both sides.

Homeschool Activities

  • Do you think that Joseph’s brothers gave a sincere apology?
        • Why or why not?
  • Write a sincere apology to someone for something that you did, or did not do.
        • Do you think that it is too late to give the apology?
  • Joseph’s brothers gave him an apology years after the event. Do you think that it is ever too late to apologize? Write an argument to present before a judge for why there should be and why there should never be a limit of time related to apologies.
  • Joseph’s brothers lied to him. Create a campaign for not lying.
  • Joseph’s brothers apologized to him. Create a campaign for apologizing to others.
      • Your campaign could include all or some of the following:
        • billboard
        • flyer
        • poster
        • blog
        • tweets
  • If you were creating a campaign for not lying, who would you aim the campaign at: youngsters, teenagers, college age, adults, or everyone? Explain your reason.
  • If you were creating a campaign for apologizing, who would you aim the campaign at: youngsters, teenagers, college age, adults, or everyone? Explain your reason.
  • Explain how cheating (like in an Olympic sport) is like lying and how it is different.
  • During the Olympics, in some competitions, like snowboarding competitors made other competitors fall. Do you think that they owe an apology to the person that they took out?
  • Write a letter to a competitor that made you fall in an Olympic competition.
  • Write a letter to the competitor that you made fall in an Olympic competition.

I’m not going to lie to you – I want you to take a look at Enjoying the Book of Esther: The Bible in Rhyme. Please click to see my Indiegogo campaign for this book.

Olympic symbol and the Bible

The Olympic Symbol and the Olympic Spirit!

Jacob's sons bury him as he asks.

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

Jacob’s sons were asked by Jacob to bury him in Israel, in the cave with his father’s that Abraham bought. Jacob’s sons did just as they were asked.

In this case doing what they were asked was great. But, sometimes in life doing just what we are asked to do isn’t enough.

Bible Study Tools

Bible Talk

Discuss with your children:

  •  If the Olympic athletes did what they were asked (they learned their sport) would it be enough to get them to the Olympics?
  • If I wrote books and even published them, but didn’t try to let people know that the books were available would that be enough?
  • If a coach instructed an Olympic athlete would that be enough? Do the coaches have to also be good role models?

Creative Thinking:

  • A Canadian cross-country ski coach at the Olympics helped a Russian skier finsh the race. Look up articles about Justin Wadsworth, the Canadian ski coach at the Sochi Games and read about how he helped athlete Anton Gafarov. Why do you think that the Justin helped Anton? Why do think some people go out of their way to go beyond just doing what they are told, or expected to do?
  • Anton knew that he could not win the Olympics, so why do you think that it was important for him to finish the finish line?
  • Would you agree that the Olympics are about more than just sport? Explain.

Homeschool Activities

  • Write a story about three people who are on the same sports team. One plays because s/he wants to go to the Olympics, one really likes to play, and one goes out for a social activity.
  • Write a story about three siblings. One goes out of his/her way to always be the best that he can be and help others in any way possible, another does what s/he is told and the third sometimes does what s/he is told and sometimes doesn’t.
  • Write a letter to Justin Wadsworth, the Canadian ski coach at the Sochi Olympic Games that helped Anton Gafarov finish skiing in the Olympics.
  • Write a letter from Anton Gafarov to the Canadian ski coach, Justin Wadsworty, explaining what it meant to him to be able to cross the finish line at the Olympics on skis.
  • Write a poem, song, or rap about Olympic spirit.
  • Explain when you think it is good to follow orders and when it is a bad idea.
  • View my latest effort to go beyond the writing for this blog with my Indiegogo campaign for my soon to be released book Enjoying the Book of Esther: The Bible in Rhyme. I’d love to know what you think. Please leave me a comment on my campaign page or through this blog.
  • Jacob’s sons buried him as they were told. Olympic athletes follow their coaches’ instructions. What advice would you give someone to follow to help make them a better person?
  • Jacob’s sons did just what they were asked to do. Would that qualify for the Olympic spirit?

What is the relationship between the Bible the Olympics and me?

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

What is the connection between the Bible, the Olympics, and me?

  • In the Bible, Joseph swore to his father that he would take his body to Israel (which was known as Canaan at the time).
  • Olympians swear to themselves and their country to do their best at whichever sport they perform.
  • I have taken upon myself to strive for excellence in my writing, for this blog and in my books.

The Bible

Joseph promised his father that he would take his body to Israel. He had to get Pharaoh’s permission and he did.

The Olympics

Olympians work very hard at their sport. They give up a lot of private time to work hard to make themselves, their country, coaches, and family proud. Sometimes they receive medals and sometimes they come home disappointed.

Me

I have worked hard to write several books of the Bible in rhyme. My latest book is Enjoying the Book of Esther: The Bible in Rhyme. This is the book of Esther all in rhyme. I have decided to put this book up on an Indiegogo campaign. I hope that you will take a look and support my efforts!

Discuss with your children:

  • When do we need permission from people to do something?
  • Is it better to do something for yourself or for someone else?
  • If you could choose to be good enough at a sport to go to the Olympics which sport would you choose?
  • Would you be willing to spend the time needed to practice for the Olympics?

Creative Thinking

  • Come up with as many reasons as you can for why Pharaoh would or would not let all the people go to bury Joseph.

Homeschool Activities

  • Joseph promised his father that he would bury him in the cave in Israel. Write what you think it means to promise someone something?
  • What do you think it means to promise yourself something?
  • What do the Olympic athletes promise themselves?
  • If you were one of Pharaoh’s advisers would you support Joseph and his family taking Jacob’s body to Israel or not? Why?
  • How would you feel if you received permission to go to the Olympics?
      • Do you think that this is the same type of feeling as Joseph had when he received permission to take Jacob’s body to Israel? Why or why not?
  • Do you think that it was hard for Joseph to ask Pharaoh for permission to take Jacob’s body to Israel? Describe in some way (through a dialogue, a cartoon, a comic strip, play, journal) the internal discussion that Joseph had with himself.
  • Sometimes it is hard to focus on what we have to do. This is one of the important things that Olympic athletes must do – focus on their sport. In order to write my books, I have to put away time and focus on my work. Joseph had to focus on his promise and ask Pharaoh to let him take Jacob’s body to Israel. What would you like to focus on in your life? Pick something that you would like to focus on and make a realistic plan to help you.

I am not good at sports, but I do dedicate a lot of my time to writing books. Please take a look at my latest book which is featured on Indiegogo!

Abraham, Hebron, Jacob

Jacob asks his sons to bury him in Canaan.

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

Jacob asks all of his sons to take him to Israel to bury him with his fathers. He goes on to say specifically where the cave is and that Abraham bought it, and who was buried there.

Bible Study Tools

Bible Talk

Discuss with your children:

  • Why do you think it was important to Jacob to be buried in the same cave as his fathers?
  • Why would Jacob have mentioned his fathers and not the mothers?

Creative Thinking

  • Why do you think that it was important to Jacob to say exactly where the cave was?
  • Why do you think that it was important to Jacob to say who Abraham had bought the cave from?

Homeschool Activities

  • Describe the place where you would like to be buried. Explain why these things are important to you.
  • Make a presentation of some sort explaining  exactly what a cave is and how it is formed.
  • The cave that Jacob is buried in is situated in present day Hebron. Draw a map that his sons could follow from Egypt to the cave in Hebron.
  • Research the city of Hebron. Write a report about it.
  • Many people still go to the cave where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob and Leah are buried. Research the cave and create a power point presentation about it.
  • Why do you think that Jacob asked all of his sons to bury him in the cave?
  • Joseph and Benjamin’s mother was not buried in this cave. How do you think they felt burying their father there? Write a diary entry, song, or poem to express their feelings.
  • Why does Jacob refer to Abraham as his father?

Jacob

Each son received an individual blessing from Jacob.

Excerpt from Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme by Marcia Goldlist

Just before Jacob died, he gave each of his sons an appropriate blessing.

Bible Study Tools

Bible Talk

Discuss with your children:

  • Why is it important to treat everyone as an individual?
  • How do people differ?
  • How are people the same?

Creative Thinking

  • The blessings that Jacob gave were partly predictions for the future. Predict the future for your family members.

Homeschool Activities

  • Write a blessing for everyone in your family.
  • If someone were to bless you, what would you like the blessing to be?
  • Make a list of things that make people different from each other.
  • Would you like everyone to be the same? Why or why not?
  • Pick someone that you would like to be like. Would you like to be the exact same as them? If not, what would you pick to be the same and what would you want to be different?
  • Pick a famous personality, dead or alive, and write what you would change about him/her if you could.
      • Do you think that the change that you made would affect history? If so, how?
  • Write about your good traits and write a blessing for yourself about these traits.
  • Write about your bad traits and make a plan to change them for the better.
  • Pick someone that you do not particularly like, or get along with. (You do not need to tell anyone who this person is.) Make a list of their good qualities.
