After Joseph had interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams he immediately proceeded to outline a plan of what Pharaoh should do. The plan began with finding a wise and understanding man.

Discuss with your children:

  • What kinds of behavior would you find in a person who is understanding?
      • Does your child have some of these characteristics?
  • What kinds of behavior would you find in a person who is wise?
      • Does your child have some of these characteristics?

Creative Thinking

  • Joseph told Pharaoh to go and find someone who is understanding and wise. Make a plan for how you would go about finding such a person.
  • Is it more important in life to be wise or understanding? Explain why.

Homeschool Activities

  • Joseph was asked to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. He did so but without asking he continued to give a solution to the problem presented in the dreams of a coming draught where there would not be any food. Did Joseph talk out of turn? Did he have the right to speak to the ruler of the country without being asked?  Remember that at that time life was much more formal.
  • Joseph advised Pharaoh to pick a wise and understanding man. If Joseph did want the job was this a good way of trying to get the job, or should he have suggested that he be given the job. Explain your position.
  • Think of something that you think needs doing in your house or neighborhood.
      • Make a plan for this to actually happen.
      • Now tell someone appropriate about your plan.
      • Can you implement your plan? If so, do so and if not explain why you can’t.
  • Joseph told Pharaoh to find an understanding and wise man.
      • What makes people wise?
          • Think of someone who you think is wise. Make a list of similarities and differences between that person and Joseph.
      • What makes someone understanding?
          • Think of someone who is understanding. Make a list of similarities and differences between that person and Joseph.
  • Joseph got hired for a job because he came up with a plan. What do you think that it takes to get hired for a job?
      • Pick three different jobs that you might like either when you grow up or for a summer job. For each job make a list of things that could help you get this job.
  • What makes someone wise? Describe a wise person as if you were writing a novel and did not want to say the person was wise, but that is what you wanted to get across.
  • What would be the opposite of a wise person? Describe this type of person.
  • Do you think that Pharaoh made a good decision to pick Joseph to oversee the plan that Joesph outlined for saving food and distributing it to the people during the years that the food would not grow? Explain why you think that it was or was not a good decision for Pharaoh to pick Joseph.
